Companies 'may be unprepared for bribery law'

British businesses are unsure of how a new UK bribery law will affect them, it is claimed. Suggesting that many firms may need to consult corporate legal services to adjust to the changes, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said businesses will need more clarification on how the Bribery Act will govern corporate hospitality. David Londsdale, assistant director of the CBI in Scotland, told the Scotsman: "There is a risk some parts of the Act's implementation could have a negative effect on investment in the UK. "In particular, we want the government to clarify rules on corporate hospitality, to ensure people who are engaged in legitimate promotional activity are not caught out." Meanwhile, Oxfam finance director Bob Humphreys told Third Sector that the government will need to provide more clarity on the law's effect on charities, despite the fact that the Act does not cover humanitarian actions. "But charities have many activities that could be considered business activities. We need some clear sector guidance in order to make sure charities know what they need to do to address the problem," he told the news provider.
