IoD: Employment law 'must be simplified'

Employment law affecting mediation services needs to be simplified because it is restricting economic growth, it has been claimed.
The Institute of Directors (IoD) has called for the government to untangle the amount of red tape, which it says is strangling businesses.
Alistair Tebbit, spokesman for the group, said there are four pieces of legislation being proposed at the moment that need to be axed.
Plans to abolish the default retirement age, extend parental leave, create new flexible working rights and gold-plate the Agency Workers Directive should all be abandoned, he argued.
"Ditching those four proposals would be an obvious stepping stone. It's all very well talking about cutting red tape or stemming it, but actions speak louder than words," added Mr Tebbit.
The government, he continued, appears to be continuing the "gradual growth" in employment law over the last 15 years, despite promises to cut red tape.
A report from the Federation of Small Businesses said that over half of the 1.7 million companies that fail in the EU every year cite the regulatory burden as a significant factor in their demise.
