South east sees decline in work-based injuries

The number of people across the south-east that are considering making a workplace accident compensation claim is falling.
A total of 3,433 serious workplace injuries were recorded in the area last year, which is a significant decrease from the 3,623 figure that was evidenced in 2008/9, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
As well as this, the HSE has announced that the predicted number of work-related illness sufferers dropped from 207,000 in 2008/09 to 201,000 in the 2009/2010 period.
Judith Hackitt, Chair of HSE said: "It is encouraging to see further reduction in the number of people being killed and seriously injured at work."
Last month, a Huddersfield retailer was fined by the HSE after a 57-year-old employee suffered severe injuries in the workplace.
Phoenox Textiles in Spring Grove Mills, Clayton West were fined £12,000 and commanded to pay £3,056 worth of costs after the incident, which left employee Dennis Hunter with a broken leg and a crushed ankle.
