New divorce laws could mean end of "unhappy marriages"

Private clients should not feel obligated to remain in unhappy marriages and can now consider divorce as a viable option, according to research.

The vast amount of information available on the internet can also help to make divorce settlements easier to reach, according to DivorceAid.

Christina Tait, founder and manager of DivorceAid, said: "With financial independence, and children now hopefully independent, one's own needs and dreams may be considered more fully."

Research suggests that money appears is a key factor in divorces for those aged over 50.

Over 50 per cent of divorce settlements involving couples over 50 were caused by financial disagreements but now divorce laws can accommodate splits, according to Saga Legal Services.

On the other hand, 27 per cent referenced a lack of commitment as reasoning for a split, while 28 per cent referred to their ex-partners as being "emotionally cold or distant".

Also, the study revealed that more than a third of divorced men and women (35 per cent) engaged in disagreements regarding which party was accountable for their split.
