New PAYE system could financially affect employees

Workers may want to seek employment law advice following new proposals that could result in citizens paying higher levels of tax.
People who regularly change their employment may be susceptible to higher tax charges from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), according to management solutions provider Giant.
The proposed changes to the PAYE system would allow the HMRC to determine tax without the intervention of employers.
Matthew Brown, managing director of Giant, said: "The PAYE system was designed for a time when people changed jobs far less frequently than they do now.
"An error by a centralised computer could leave millions of workers unpaid or taxed the wrong amount."
Meanwhile, government reductions may lead to financial distress such as personal insolvency, according to John Fairhurst, managing director at debt solution provider Payplan.
Mr Fairhurst added that bankruptcy is a "taboo subject" that workers prefer to ignore.
