OFT publishes consumer guide

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has warned private clients about companies which suggest that they can remove the debts of their customers.
A new guide provided by the OFT offers guidance to consumers about their legal rights and advises how to defend themselves against businesses which break the law.
Consumers can request a duplicate of their credit or hire agreement for £1, which needs to inform them of the original agreement, an updated agreement (if applicable) and the amount that is still owed.
If businesses cannot offer this information, they cannot take actions such as obtaining a court judgement because the agreement would become "unenforceable".
Although, any exceptional money may still need to be provided to the lender and debts will return to being enforceable when the necessary information has been released.
In August it was revealed that members of the British public could plunge into debt, as an increasing amount of people spend excessively.
Figures from the British Retail Consortium revealed that comparative sales in August were 0.1 per cent higher than August 2009, while overall spending had increased 2.4 per cent from last year.
