£100m spent on fixing illegal gas jobs

Private clients have been advised to ensure that they select authenticated repair men to fix gas systems, after research has claimed that £100 million is spent per year on fixing illegal gas repair work.
One in five homes were regarded as having "immediately dangerous" gas systems, according to the Gas Safe Register (GSR).
In addition, research by the GSR suggested that one in three people (39 per cent) would allow just a friend's recommendation to dictate their choice of gas fitter.
Phil Brewster, Gas Safe Register’s national investigations manager, said: "If you have a boiler fitted by a gas engineer who isn't registered to do the work, then you may end up paying to have it ripped out and start again which may cost you thousands of pounds."
This news comes after a chimney scam was reported in Yarmouth earlier this month, according to the website Wicked Local.
Men around the area are posing as chimney sweeps and requesting a financial deposit for chimney work that they will not complete.
