New asbestos ruling over mesothelioma disease

A small group of "run-off insurers" have opposed the majority of UK providers over a new asbestos ruling that may be issued at the Court of Appeal on Friday.

According to the Independent, the Court of Appeal will rule in a test case on Friday if sufferers of the asbestos cancer mesothelioma will have their asbestos compensation claims honoured by Britain's insurance companies.

A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers admitted to the newspaper: "This is being brought by a small group of run-off insurers against the views of the majority of UK insurers."

Mesothelioma is an asbestos-related pulmonary cancer that causes an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 deaths per year worldwide and medical science company Somalogic has this week announced new technology that may enable better clinical diagnosis of the condition in its early stages.

Rachel Ostroff, clinical research director of Somalogic Inc, said: "Detection of these aggressive cancers at an earlier stage would identify patients for early treatment, which may improve their survival and quality of life."
