Preston engineering company fined after worker's death



Preston engineering company, Autoy Ltd was fined £17,500 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) at Preston Crown Court on Friday, after 45-year-old Michael Lohaza was discovered dead  following a personal injury site at the site on January 10th 2009.

Michael Lohaza was found by two co-workers after he became entangled on a nine-metre metal screw at the company's site in Castleton Road, Preston.

Autoy Ltd was prosecuted by the HSE for failing to ensure Mr Lohaza's safety and for being unable to measure the risks workers faced while operating the company's machinery.

The company pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and Regulation 3(1)(a) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, as well as this, they were ordered to pay £12,251 in costs.

Michael Clarke, the investigating inspector at HSE, said: "Autoy was unable to demonstrate it had assessed the risks faced by employees."

Meanwhile, on the September 10th 2010, Salford company Windmill Demolition Company Ltd were fined after the death of worker, John Cain, 36, who was struck by the excavator bucket of a digger.
