Kier construction firm fined £160k after worker's death

Kier North West, part of the Kier group, has been fined £160,000 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after a personal injury led to the death of Wallsey man Karl Davis, who fell from a building in Halewood after a guardrail failed to support his body.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that Kier North West's site management team had failed to ensure that a temporary guardrail could hold the weight of an attached refuse chute, which led to Mr Davis falling from an open window frame.
Kier North West, which is based in Tempsford Hall in Sandy, Bedfordshire pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 for failing to ensure the safety of workers.
In addition to the £160,000 fine, the company were ordered to pay an extra cost of £43,993.
This news comes after Peterborough fabric company E-Leather limited were commanded to pay a £13,500 following an injury to Robert Dunn, 32, who had his arm crushed by one of the firm's machines.
