UK dispute resolution arbitration 'on the rise'

The number of UK residents using arbitration and mediation has risen considerably after recent economic instability, according to a new report
Resolution disputes through arbitration and mediation in the UK, including commercial dispute resolutions, reached 34,541 in 2009, a 78 per cent increase on the 2007 figure, TheCityUK figures showed.
Khawar Qureshi QC, chairman of TheCityUK's legal Services and dispute resolution group, said: "The CityUK report provides a valuable insight into the UK's dispute resolution sector, and confirms London's pre-eminent position for international business disputes."
The CityUK report notes that dispute resolutions are handled by a small quantity of organisations, and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) administered the most with a total of 8,845 in 2009.
This amount may be attributed to Rics' introduction of a pan-industry Planning Mediation Service in 2009.
Second was the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, which controlled 4,659 and the London Maritime Arbitrators' Association issued 4,445 - the third highest amount.
