Majority of local authorities can "manage Asbestos safely"

A large proportion of local authorities responsible "system build" schools now have adequate measures in place to decrease asbestos compensation claims, according to the Health and Safety Executive(HSE).
Some 72 per cent of the English councils that offer education services were found to adhere to the 2006 Control of Asbestos Regulations in the most recent round of assessments.
Out of the remaining 42 authorities, 32 councils were handed extra advice about practical improvements and ten authorities received enforcement notices to improve their treatment of asbestos.
Rosalind Roberts, HSE head of the public services sector, said: "We are satisfied that most local authorities were taking their responsibilities seriously when it comes to managing asbestos in system build schools."
Last month, the dangers of the substance were highlighted when the HSE revealed that marine reclamation company Acetech Construction Limited was fined for exposing its workers to asbestos.
Subsequent to the hearing, HSE inspector Kirsty Welsh said: "It's vitally important that workers are protected."
