Many solicitors concerned about ABS reform

The introduction of more process-driven residential property conveyancing rules could make new entrants to the market more vulnerable , a recent survey suggested, although feelings among lawyers are mixed.
Opinions about the initiation of alternative business structures (ABS) from October next year varied significantly according to job description, a Contact Law survey of over 300 solicitors seen exclusively be the Law Gazette revealed. ABS changes apply to how law firms can structure their businesses, so that they can operate more cost-effectively.
Dan Watkins, director of Contact Law's find-a-solicitor service, told the Gazette: "They clearly feel that the more process-driven nature of conveyancing will be especially vulnerable to new entrants into the market."
This survey comes after figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders revealed that gross mortgage lending is on the decline.
This could see a decline in conveyancing business for law firms relative to last year, following the end of the stamp duty holiday and the anticipated impact on housing market transactions.
