Lester bill viewed as "admirable"

The government's Lester bill, which tackles libel dispute resolution, has been supported by Guardian editor, Alan Rushbridger.
He commends the bill in an article for the Spectator for recognising the dangers of defamation by choosing to enforce "responsible publication on matters of public interest", which will help to reduce the number of libel issues affecting individuals.
Mr Rushbringer advocated the bill, admitting that it "attracted a surprising amount of support in its second reading in July" in the House of Commons.
It is now the government's intention to unveil their own bill next spring, which is a move welcomed by Mr Rushbringer, who hopes that the government don't change their "mood" on the matter.
Meanwhile, American shores have seen the introduction of an anti-libel tourism bill that protects US journalists and writers from "libel tourists" who use courts with weaker laws to bring defamation cases, which are demonstrably contrary to the country's First Amendment rights.
In regards to this law, Index On Censorship's news editor, Padraig Reidy wrote on Journalism.co.uk: "A powerful case has been made beyond our shores for libel reform in the UK."
