Waste and recycling groups warned of personal injury claims

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has told local authorities that they may face personal injury claims if they do not make sure their waste and recycling programmes are up to scratch and compliant with rules.
Regardless of whether councils carry out operations themselves or rely on a contractor, they may still be responsible for any accidents that occur and could face legal action, the body warned.
Wayne Williams, inspector for the HSE, said: "Despite recent improvements, the performance of the waste and recycling sector is still poor compared with others."
Figures show that the industry has nine times more fatal accidents than the national average and four times as many workers suffer injuries due to poor health and safety standards.
Premier Foods Group was recently forced to pay a £14,000 fine after the HSE discovered a breach of regulations following an incident where one worker was left with severe brain injuries.
