Brits continue to spend

Brits could be risking personal debt as figures for the amount spent in UK shops continues to rise.

According to British Retail Consortium (BRC) data for August, like-for-like sales were 0.1 per cent higher when compared with the same month in 2009, while total spending was up 2.4 per cent on a year ago.

The group suggested that warm weather boosted spending on food and homeware, however, there are signs that consumers are looking to curtail their outgoings.

Despite children returning to school, spending on clothing and footwear actually dropped, and one representative claimed that this could be to do with the wider economy.

A spokesperson for the BRC suggested: "More concern about public sector job cuts in Scotland has made shoppers more cautious about spending."

Jo Parsley, advocacy and media officer for Credit Action, recently advised that UK citizens should ensure their personal debts are kept under control by spending within their means.
