Premier Foods Group faces personal injury claim

A personal injury claim has left one the biggest food producers in the UK with a fine for £14,000.

Premier Foods Group was forced to pay the penalty after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) discovered a breach of regulations following an incident with one of its workers.

Employee Thomas Williams had his skull crushed by a falling 65 kg metal pillar and suffered severe brain and spine injuries which have left him with difficulty speaking and moving.

Phil Redman, the investigating inspector at HSE, said: "A man's life has been turned upside down because basic health and safety procedures weren't followed. Mr Williams has been permanently disabled from his injuries and will never be able to return to work."

An HSE investigation recently resulted in Interserve (Defence) Ltd being fined £33,000 and ordered to pay costs of £17,936 for potentially exposing Ministry of Defence workers to asbestos fibres.
