Personal injury results in £28.5k fine

In a personal injury claim, a Croydon-based company has been fined £28,500 and ordered to pay £9,359 in costs after a 17-year-old worker fell through a roof-light just weeks into his job.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that Lewis Edwards from Sidcup had been left alone and unsupervised to clean out the guttering on a warehouse roof, which the City of London Magistrates was told was an unsafe way of doing the work.
Mr Edwards fell seven metres and suffered fractures to his collar bone, pelvis, left wrist and elbow, upper left arm and several vertebrae, as well as a ruptured spleen that required surgery.
"Young, inexperienced workers cannot be expected to be aware of risks or have knowledge of safety controls. It's the employer's responsibility to put in place measures to ensure their employees' safety at work," said HSE inspector Clare Hawkes.
Similarly, another company was fined £14,000 - and its director £2,750 - for failing to carry out a risk assessment, which led to a night watchman coming to harm after falling into water from a dock.
