Unemployed debtors 'becoming more commonplace'

Increasing numbers of unemployed people are finding themselves in debt, it has been suggested.
Ian Boden-Smyth, spokesperson for the UK Insolvency Helpline Debt Advice Service, commented on the apparent trend for the jobless to slide into further financial problems.
He said: "It's shocking to hear that people who are on benefits are in debt. What we're finding is that in today's economy, more and more people are becoming unemployed and they've still got their debts."
Mr Boden-Smyth added that money worries for this group are becoming an increasingly frequent problem in terms of queries made to the organisation.
The expert suggested that the ease of obtaining credit in the UK is partly responsible for the pattern.
Previously, the Consumer Credit Counselling Service reported that one in eight people who got in touch with the charity in the first half of 2010 for debt advice matters were already claiming Jobseeker's Allowance.
