Thousands of UK citizens 'killed prematurely by work'

Personal injury compensation claimants might have noted news of a TUC report which claimed more than 20,000 people in the UK are killed prematurely by work each year.

According to the organisation, health and safety matters are as relevant today as they were in the past.

The union points towards problems caused by occupational cancers, lung disorders and traffic accidents as being some of the reasons for early deaths.

In addition, the group showed that 1.2 million staff in the UK believe they experience a degree of work-related illness, ranging from heart disease to back pain and stress.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber stated: "The UK continues to need strong regulation and enforcement."

He said such strategies are effective as they save lives and prevent "contraction of unnecessary illnesses".

Meanwhile, a Health and Safety Executive investigation has resulted in Newcastle City Council being fined after a five-year-old girl's hand was struck by the rotating blades of a fan at the Discovery Museum.
