Employers 'not aware of how to deal with staff depression'

Workers suffering from mental health issues such as depression and anxiety could benefit from a greater level of support from their bosses, it has been suggested.
Andy Bell, deputy chief executive of the Centre for Mental Health, discussed the current lack of understanding on the part of employers with regards to these types of problems.
"There is a general lack of awareness of ... many of the more simple things you can do to address depression in the workplace," he said.
Mr Bell also stated: "By and large, employers don't know what to do."
The expert asserted that part of the solution in rectifying the problem would be to develop skills and knowledge about these issues among line managers.
Meanwhile, a survey by Turning Point recently showed that three-quarters of UK citizens experience some kind of depression on a regular or occasional basis, although only a third seek help and advice.
