Construction companies fined £125k in personal injury case

Those looking for an expert's advice regarding work-related injury matters might be interested to learn that two construction companies have been fined a total of £125,000 after an accident.
Steven McColgan suffered serious physical damage after a 21-metre fall from a hospital building in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
And following the event, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted employers Laing O'Rourke Construction and Expanded Structures for their share of the responsibility.
Newcastle Crown Court heard that Mr McColgan stepped on an unsupported working platform, which caused the fall.
HSE investigated the incident and found that sections of the temporary falsework structure had been removed before all the tasks had been completed.
Victoria Wise, an inspector for the authority, said the businesses "failed in their duty of care to Mr McColgan, who was lucky to survive the fall".
Elsewhere, HSE recently announced that London Tower Crane Hire & Sales were fined £18,000 - plus costs - after a four tonne load crashed into the ground at Hertfordshire Regional College, narrowly missing students.
