Consumers 'should not hesitate to get the right insurance cover'

The importance of having a good understanding about insurance issues has been outlined by one organisation.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), consumers should equip themselves with as much knowledge as possible before securing cover.

It has published a tips and myths guide for 2010 which is intended to enable citizens to make the most informed choices.

And Maggie Craig, acting director general at the group, commented: "In the current economic climate, it is even more important people are not under-insured or put off getting vital cover because they don't understand how insurance works."

She said that those who have questions about specific needs should feel confident about asking their insurer any queries.

One issue the ABI was keen to address related to driving - it noted that it is a myth for consumers to think a vehicle is worth the same as the original price, rather than what it costs to replace.

Arguably, the right home insurance deal can put people's minds at rest with regards to the repercussions of an unexpected offence against a property.
