Tyneside firm fined after worker injures hand

Those seeking advice for matters relating to personal injury experiences in the workplace might be interested to learn that a Tyneside firm has been fined £8,000 after one of its employees damaged his hand.
Gary Burke lost his little finger and part of the remaining ones after getting his hand caught between two rotating metal rollers at Formica in North Shields.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the machine used had experienced a variety of production problems prior to the incident.
Mr Burke - who has returned to work in a light duty capacity - is hopeful that doctors will be able to reconstruct two of the fingers.
Following the case, Andrea Robbins, HSE inspector, said production problems "such as misalignment of belts and nicks in the paper were a regular problem with this machine and had been occurring for a number of years - yet Formica had done little about it".
Previously, the authority prosecuted Workington company ACP, which was fined £15,000 after an employee was impaled by a steel cable.
