Businesses 'imposing tougher employment conditions in light of recession'

Many workers appear to be seeking legal advice regarding their employment conditions, with many businesses apparently using the recession as an excuse for squeezing extra unpaid hours from their staff.
Phil Flaxton, chief executive officer of Work Wise UK, responded to news of a 15 per cent monthly increase during July 2010 in the amount of people requesting consultations from Contract Law about such matters.
He said it is a well-documented problem, adding: "This is unpaid work - they are not being paid overtime."
Mr Flaxton summarised: "There could be cases where staff are being asked to put in additional work because of pressure on the business."
The expert added that in some sectors, staff are known to work 50 hour weeks, with many unhappy employees pushing ahead with legal action in a bid to call to account the perceived offences of their bosses.
The news comes after the Office for National Statistics announced that the number of people in work went up by 184,000 between April and June 2010.
