Older people 'experiencing greater unemployment'

When looking for an expert's opinion on matters relating to employment, news that the number of older people out of work has increased by more than 50 per cent in the last year might be at the forefront of people's minds.
Age UK revealed that 170,000 people in this group have been jobless during this period, equating to two in five individuals.
In addition, this represents an 18.6 per cent increase over the last quarter, which is the highest rise for any age group.
Furthermore, males were most affected by the trend, comprising more than three quarters of the unemployed people studied.
Commenting on the figures, Michelle Mitchell, charity director at the organisation, said: "Before pushing people back into the recruitment arena or forcing them to work for longer, the government must lay the foundations of a better job market for older people, with fairness and flexibility as cornerstones."
Elsewhere, moneysupermarket.com reported that people who reach the age of 66 face a 109 per cent increase in their travel insurance premiums compared with those aged 65.
