Britons over 66 'face punitive travel insurance rates'

UK citizens who reach the age of 66 will see a 109 per cent rise in their travel insurance premiums when compared to people aged 65, it has been suggested.

According to moneysupermarket.com, individuals are liable to pay the costs on the grounds of their age.

In addition, those turning 70 will face a 12 per cent increase in their premiums.

Bob Atkinson, travel expert at the organisation, suggested that the current prices are not justifiable.

"Insurers need to change their attitude towards older travellers and play fair," he said.

Mr Atkinson added that it is important that "the premium charged reflects the actual risk posed".

The expert also highlighted how travel insurance is essential for all travellers, especially in light of how medical expenses can be expensive overseas.

Elsewhere, R3 published figures which showed that more than two million holidaymakers have put themselves in debt in a bid to finance their excursions.
