More transparency for solicitors' disciplinary matters 'a good idea'

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has suggested that details of solicitors' disciplinary past should be easily accessible.

As part of its proposed changes for dealing with professional indemnity insurance, ABI claimed there should be a faster method of handling such proceedings, The Law Gazette reports.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the organisation, stated: "We can avoid periodic crises and achieve long-term stability if we work together to reform this market."

He also remarked: "A thriving insurance market is competitive, flexible and innovative."

Mr Starling observed that although the planned changes will not come about easily, the current arrangements for solicitors and insurers are inadequate.

Recently, the ABI responded to the government's emergency Budget by welcoming measures designed to make the UK a more competitive location.

The group claimed a five per cent shift towards the private sector in the insurance market could save £17 million for British taxpayers and the state.
