TUC welcomes minimum wage increase

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has praised a government move to increase the National Minimum Wage across the board. It was recently revealed by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills that the minimum wage for over-22s would rise from £5.80 to £5.93 in October, while a rate of £2.50 per hour is to be offered for all apprenticeships. According to Paul Sellers, national minimum wage officer for the TUC, young people taking up apprenticeships at businesses will be able to have more confidence in the quality of their courses thanks to the increase. He explained: "It is good that the government will ensure that all apprentices are covered by the national minimum wage. That is needed to prevent exploitation and to ensure that the quality of the apprenticeship brand is protected." The rate is "very modest", the expert added, although it is likely that the government is taking stock of the current tough economy and could be looking to raise the rate further in the future.
