Minister 'changes her mind over gay rights'

Home secretary Theresa May has suggested that she now believes gay couples should be allowed to adopt children. The cabinet member, who was also named as minister for women and equalities under the new coalition government despite a poor voting record on gay issues, claimed on BBC One's Question Time that she has changed her mind. May voted against a repeal of Section 28, which banned local councils from promoting homosexuality, in 2000 and against gay adoption in 2002, but told the programme's audience that she would not vote the same way if the votes were taken again. "If [children] have an opportunity of being in a stable, family environment - be that a heterosexual couple or a gay couple - then I think it's more important that that child is in that stable and loving environment," she said. Elected as MP for Maidenhead in 1997, May has also campaigned to improve train services, build a new bridge over the River Thames and stop local over-development. Posted by Helen Causer
