Age discrimination 'may be increasing due to economic problems'



The UK may be seeing a rise in age discrimination as a result of the ongoing economic problems.

This is according to a new report from the Institute for Employment Studies (IfES), which suggested there is a risk that the cuts being implemented by businesses at present could have a disproportionate impact on older staff members.

It noted that the views of some firms are stuck in the past when it comes to such workers.

The organisation - which was established in 1969 and describes itself as a centre of expertise on staffing and labour market issues - stated that while companies are providing personnel with retirement support, they are failing to encourage older employees to remain in their positions.

They are therefore missing out on opportunities to retain valuable skills, the IfES stated.

Commenting on the issue, the institute's Marie Strebler said: "Negative attitudes and stereotypes in the workplace have not necessarily disappeared with the advent of age discrimination laws."
