Same-sex marriage 'should be permitted'

The government should change the rules concerning same-sex marriage, it has been suggested.
Writing in the Independent, gay rights activist Peter Tatchell described current legislation as the "last homophobic law" in the UK.
He remarked: "We are left with a prime minister and a deputy who talk gay rights but who are unwilling to abolish the one remaining law that discriminates against lesbian and gay people."
This is despite the fact that there is strong public support for a change in the law, he added.
The campaigner cited figures from the Times, which suggested 61 per cent of people in the UK believe gay couples should be permitted to get married in a registry office on exactly the same basis as their heterosexual counterparts.
Mr Tatchell - who is a co-founder of action group OutRage! - made his comments ahead of an event hosted last night (June 16th) at Downing Street during which gay community leaders took part in discussions.
