TV presenter makes age discrimination claims

Women working in TV over 45 "are not safe", according to one TV presenter who believes she lost her job at the BBC last year because of her age.

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, former Countryfile presenter Miriam O'Reilly, 53, said the sacking reminded her of being bullied at school for being Irish.

Miss O'Reilly and three other female presenters in their 40s and 50s were cut from the popular rural affairs programme as bosses moved the show from Sunday morning to a primetime slot.

She said: "My age shouldn't be an issue if I can still do my job, which I believe I can."

The axed presenters were replaced by Julia Bradbury, 38 and Matt Baker, 32, while veteran presenter John Craven, 69, retained his role on the show.

A spokesperson for the BBC, which aims to use license fee funding to provide programmes that entertain, educate and inform, said: "Any suggestion that the presenters of Countryfile were replaced on the grounds of age is absolute nonsense."
