MP takes up asbestos compensation fight

A politician has taken up the battle to secure compensation for those who have been affected by the industrial disease pleural plaques.
Rachel Reeves, who is the new Leeds West MP, demanded to know whether the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition - which was formed following the general election on May 6th - will honour promises by the previous administration to provide damages to such people.
She is applying pressure on the new government to back commitments to establish an employers' Liability Insurance Bureau, which would provide money to victims who cannot trace their ex-employer's insurers.
Mr Reeves stated: "There is a real concern that the coalition will use the country's financial deficit as an excuse to unfairly target working people."
This may have a particularly detrimental impact on those who have been left dealing with effects of exposure to asbestos, she added.
As well as pleural plaques, the insulating material is associated with conditions such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.
