Managers 'must protect health and safety of young workers'

It is the legal duty of managers to look after the wellbeing of staff members and young personnel can be particularly at risk of accidents and injury.
This was the message delivered recently by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Inspector at the organisation Tracey Cartwright stated that bosses have a responsibility to safeguard workers and they may have to pay particular attention to "vulnerable young" employees.
She made her comments after an incident occurred involving a 17-year-old in which he fractured his ankle.
Jonathan Holmes was performing his role in the workshop of Sub Surface Engineering when a large sheet of steel being moved by a forklift hit him.
The extension on the vehicle had not been fitted properly and as the plate was being transferred, both it and the steel slid off and fell onto Mr Holmes.
According to the HSE, there were a total of around 246,000 reportable injuries suffered by workers in 2008-09.
