Older people 'are bucking divorce trend'

Growing numbers of family law, mediation and relationship lawyers could be required to settle disputes between spouses over the age of 60, following comments from one journalist. Writing for the Times, Helen Rumbelow explained Office for National Statistics data has shown that although divorce rates are dropping in nearly every age group, they are actually increasing among over-60s. Speaking to the writer, Ella Cook stated that it can often take a long time to have the confidence to leave an unhappy marriage, while Andrew Smith explained that age may bring with it an "independence of spirit", as well as an intolerance. Ms Rumbelow remarked: "I kind of admire [older divorcees] for not crumbling away into her kitchen and his garage and silently rancorous mealtimes. They chose a new life, towards the end of their lives." Her comments follow figures from Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks that showed more than one million families in the UK are arguing more as a direct result of the recession.
