Consumers advised to check their tax

Consumers have been advised to check the level of tax they are paying.
The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group (LITRG) noted that the government is drawing up a Budget in June, meaning changes may be made to the system.
Young people entering work for the first time should ensure they are not paying too much in levies by checking they have the right tax code, the organisation pointed out.
Meanwhile, those who are setting out in business or who work on a freelance basis need to notify HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), it noted.
Failure to do so can result in a penalty, the LITRG went on to warn.
People who believe they may be unable to pay their tax debts should inform HMRC - which was formed following the merger of Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise Departments - it suggested.
Those who do so are likely to receive a sympathetic response, it added.
