Expenditure on acquisitions by UK firms 'fell in 2010'

The amount of money spent by UK companies on acquisitions of other firms fell during the first three months of this year.
This is according to newly published figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which showed there was a fall in expenditure by such businesses on other enterprises operating in the country of £0.4 billion compared with the previous quarter.
Whereas £1.4 billion was spent in this way between October and December 2009, this had fallen to £1 billion between January and March this year.
Meanwhile, £0.2 billion was used to buy companies abroad over the last quarter, which was a fall from the £1 billion registered over the last three months of 2009.
The ONS also found that expenditure on acquisitions in the UK by foreign businesses fell from £15.1 billion to £14.3 billion over the same period.
Recently, business secretary Vince Cable said new rules are needed concerning takeovers as such deals need to be done transparently and with regard to shareholders' long-term interests.
