Warning issued over asbestos handling

Organisations must ensure they conform to safety rules concerning asbestos when they are in engaged in its removal from buildings.
This was the message delivered by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently after a local authority and its contractor were fined for breaches.
The case involved the City of Lincoln Council and County Waste and centred on work that left a family exposed to asbestos fibres for three days because insulation boards at their home were taken out incorrectly.
According to the HSE - which exists to minimise the risks to people's wellbeing that arise as a result of workplace activity - the employee responsible for the procedure lacked adequate information or training.
Commenting on the case, inspector at the safety body Martin Giles said: "Asbestos is a hidden killer and the HSE has a wealth of information on its website to help employers manage the risks of working with the material."
He added that there is "no excuse" for ignorance when it comes to dealing with the lives of individuals.
