New code of practice for will makers gets OFT approval

A new code of practice intended for legal service providers responsible for producing wills has received approval from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).
The Institute of Professional Willwriters (IPW) gained the recognition under the Consumer Code of Approval Scheme.
Paul Sharpe, chairman of the organisation - which is managed by an elected council of eight members and has offices in Halesowen and Edinburgh - said it is crucial those seeking advice concerning a will are treated well.
He added: "The loss of a loved one is one of the most stressful times in a person's life. Everyone should make a will and that will should be made right first time."
As a result of the development, consumers using a member of the IPW will have greater protection.
Firms operating under the code have to fulfil a range of responsibilities, including completing work within time frames agree with the client, passing an entrance exam and providing consumers with a seven-day cooling off period, among other rules.
