New code of conduct to tackle sex discrimination receives welcome

A new code of conduct which has been designed to tackle discrimination faced by women at the highest level in FTSE companies has received a welcome.

According to training director for everywoman Toni Eastwood, it will serve to the advantage of both employees and the firms themselves.

She made her comments in response to the publication of guidelines on governance standards by the Financial Reporting Council.

Under the terms of rules devised by the organisation, businesses must show "due regard for the benefits of diversity on the board, including gender" when hiring at board level.

In addition, there should be a formal, rigorous and transparent procedure for the appointment of new directors, the council specified.

Ms Eastwood stated: "[It] will help to further the issue around gender imbalance in Europe, as having diversity at both senior and board level has proven to benefit the bottom line for businesses."

She also praised Norway's introduction of a ruling last year which specified that all company boards must be at least 40 per cent female.
