Constructive dismissal compensation 'may increase'

The level of compensation awarded to top-paid workers who are the victims of unfair dismissal may rise, it has been suggested.
According to a report in the Times, the outcome of a recent case involving consultant surgeon Michael Edwards may set a precedent that will have this effect.
The health professional was sacked for professional and personal misconduct.
He alleged that the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust - which employs more than 3,000 members of staff - failed to follow a contractually binding disciplinary procedure before it axed him from his position.
Mr Edwards made a claim for more than £4 million, arguing that this reflected the amount he had lost since he was dismissed.
During a recent hearing in the Court of Appeal, the trust unsuccessfully argued that even if it had failed to follow the correct procedure, damages should be capped at the amount the former employee would have earned during his three-month notice period.
