Businessman 'shocked at how people can avoid debt recovery'

A businessman has described how he was surprised to discover how easy it can be for people to avoid debt collection in some cases.
Gareth Thomas noted that since the beginning of the economic downturn, there has been a rising need for businesses to get money from slow paying or non-paying clients, the Reading Post reports.
A lack of due diligence by creditors, disputes and absconding debtors were all factors contributing to this, he suggested.
He remarked: "I was amazed at how people could rebuff payment and how the law seemed to protect them."
Mr Thomas reacted by establishing a debt recovery business, which he says has been thriving due to high demand.
Recently, Lynn Riley from Cheshire West and Chester Council pointed out that collecting alleged debts that in fact do not exist is an offence that should be punished.
She made her comments after organisations in the area began receiving false invoices.
