Mergers in NHS 'likely to continue'

Over the course of this parliament, it is likely that NHS mergers will continue to occur, it has been claimed.
Writing in the Times, Giles Newman from Grant Thornton said there will be a focus on how to realign frontline services.
Tie-ups in the sector have already occured, he noted, pointing to the agreement between Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and St Mary's NHS Trust, as well as the acquisition of Bedfordshire and Luton Partnership NHS Trust by South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust.
He remarked: "Many mergers and reorganisations have, unfortunately, had limited impact and their use needs to be properly planned."
The priority of those in charge should be the creation of organisations that are stable and will last a long time, Mr Newman added.
Recently, Ofgem warned that mergers in the energy industry could have a negative impact on consumers and could impede its ability to regulate the sector effectively.
