Occupational hearing loss 'is unacceptable'

The fact that workers have been exposed to noise loud enough to damage their hearing is not acceptable, it has been suggested.

Commenting on the issue, Andy Worth from the GMB said it is important not to let firms that ignore health and safety laws get away with it.

Employers must provide the correct equipment to minimise the damage done to staff members' ears, he noted.

Mr Worth stated: "Many of our members have been negligently exposed to excessive levels of noise in the workplace by their employers."

His remarks followed the successful attempt of one man to secure compensation for his industrial deafness.

Neil Dawson received over £5,000 in damages for his suffering.

He is a member of the GMB - a campaigning union that claims to have almost 610,000 members - and at the age of 48 he is reliant on two hearing aids.

His ability to detect sounds was damaged in his first job as an apprentice for Richard Dunston Shipbuilders.
