'More needs to be done' to protect workers from asbestos

More resolute action needs to be taken in order to protect workers from exposure to asbestos, it has been stated.
According to Unison, greater scrutiny should be placed on employers in this regard.
It made its comments following the release of new figures, which showed that over the last year, more than £2 million was paid out to its members who had made claims concerning ill-health caused by the hazardous insulating material.
General secretary of the organisation Dave Prentis said: "Too many employers put short-cuts before the safety of their staff and many workers still suffer in silence, losing their physical and mental health."
He added that while damages payments can help asbestos victims by providing resources for treatment and covering the needs of families, they cannot make up for the effects of the diseases.
The substance is associated with a range of medical conditions, including mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural plaques.
