Injuries caused by slips and trips 'costly for firms'

Companies are paying out large amounts of money as a result of injuries suffered by members of the public in slips and trips, it has been claimed.
According to Aviva, payouts can reach more than £1 million in some cases.
The organisation - which describes itself as the world's fifth largest insurance group - warned businesses which have premises that are regularly visited by members of the public to implement strong health and safety practices.
"Good housekeeping is the first and most important method of preventing falls due to slips and trips," stated Phil Grace, liability risk manager at Aviva.
He added that 90 per cent of such accidents occur when the floor is wet with water or contaminated by food, drink or other substances.
All spillages need to be marked until they have been cleaned up, he noted, pointing out that obstacles should also be removed from walkways.
