CCCS reports rise in personal insolvencies

There has been an increase in the number of people experiencing serious debt problems, it has been revealed.

According to the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), a total of more than 93,000 people called it for help with their debts in the first three months of this year.

This was an increase from the 69,432 recorded during the same quarter in 2009.

The organisation, which is a registered charity and aims to assist people who are experiencing financial difficulty by providing impartial advice, said it has had to up its capacity to meet the rising demand.

External affairs director at the CCCS Delroy Corinaldi remarked: "The UK's personal debt pain continues and this is even before the imminent public spending cuts."

He added it is crucial that individuals who find themselves in trouble seek advice.

This can be found online, in face-to-face meetings or over the phone, the expert pointed out.

Rick Munro, head of corporate recovery and insolvency at Lamport Bassitt, said: "The best advice I can give to people with debt problems is seek advice early.

"The earlier the problem is addressed the more options that are available and the more sympathetic creditors tend to be."
