Merger plans 'may lead to world's biggest airline'

The world's largest airline may be created if plans for a merger are given the green light, it has been claimed.
According to the Investors Chronicle, if United Airlines and Continental Airlines go ahead with recent proposals to do such a deal, it would make the resulting operation bigger than any of its rivals.
The news source commented: "The deal should pave the way for some capacity and cost reductions that might help the embattled global industry rebuild profitability after years of losses."
It went on to claim that there is unlikely to be a major trans-continental merger involving a US firm because the country still limits foreign ownership of its airlines to 25 per cent.
Paul Butler, airlines analyst at Macquarie, concurred with this, sating there are too many concerns in America about national and employment security for such a move to happen.
Recently, Tony Wray, chief executive of Severn Trent, told the Financial Times that there is an excess of firms in the UK's private water industry and mergers must therefore take place.
