DIY wills 'can lead to problems'

When consumers draw up their own wills, difficulties can arise, it has been claimed.

In an article for the Independent, Alessia Horwich noted that small mistakes made when such documents are being drawn up can lead to significant problems later on.

Indeed, she suggested that when corners are cut, bereaved families can be left with even more problems than they would have been if no will had been left.

Ms Horwich stated that one of the mistakes made by some people is that they forget to sign their wills, while others do not realise that they need to get two witnesses to be present at the same time to sign it.

Earlier this year, Aviva published research which suggested that 46 per cent of people polled had received money in the form of pre-inheritances.

Such arrangements occur when individuals pass on some of their estates to beneficiaries prior to their deaths.
